New York City

Click above to learn more about key issues facing New York CityClick above to learn more about key issues facing New York CityNew York City has emerged as a leading example of local government action on the environment. The City Council and the administration of Mayor Michael Bloomberg have prioritized sustainability, as PlaNYC 2030, shows.

Much work, however, remains. The environmental challenges facing the five boroughs remain daunting. Energy consumption is rising at an unsustainable rate. Our waterways continue to be polluted by raw sewage after only minor storms. Our infrastructure is, in too many instances, hopelessly outdated and inefficient. Solid waste becomes more and more expensive to export and our recycling rates have failed to return to pre-2002 levels.

Guided by the NYLCV Education Fund's New York City Policy Agenda, our New York City chapter advocates for solutions to these challenges. In addition, we are active in shaping the next iteration of PlaNYC, which will be released in 2011.

The strong interest in local environmental action has also underscored the importance of electing sustainability-minded candidates to political office. For that reason, our New York City Chapter is engaging and developing a citywide advocacy network that will help keep the Big Apple on the path toward a sustainable future.
