  • Climate Week Headlines: Summit at the U.N.; Biden Announces Climate Corp

“The climate crisis is a fossil fuel crisis,” Gov. Gavin Newsom told the U.N. “It’s the burning of oil, burning of gas, the burning of coal,” he said, adding that “for decades, the oil industry has been playing each and everyone in this room for fools. Their deceit and denial going back decades has created the condition that persists here today.”

NY's Electric School Bus Push: What to Know
We’re all familiar with the yellow school buses of our childhood: the rattling sounds of metal, the squeals of our peers, leather seats that had seen better days. Their presence was an integral part to so many childhoods – so what’s being changed? Transportation is a leading contributor to greenhouse gas emissions in New York, accounting for a third of total overall emissions. Not only are these emissions harming the planet, but research has shown that they are also harming New York’s children, leading to higher levels of asthma.

Introducing Our Interactive School Bus Depot Map, a New Tool for Electric School Bus Advocacy
NYLCV has been working on an interactive map that shows the location of school bus depots across NYC and gives a visual representation of the disproportionate number of school bus depots located in environmental justice areas, areas with high asthma rates, and areas with poor air quality. We took an original map created by the New York Lawyers for the Public Interest (NYLPI) and layered on relevant data showcasing air quality and potential environmental justice (EJ) areas across the city. We used the United Hospital Fund Boundaries to outline different neighborhoods across the City.

Major Environmental Investments in Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act
The deal secures an investment of $1.2 trillion, some of which will be used to fund new climate resilience projects, such as electric school buses, EV infrastructure, zero-low emission public transit, the removal of lead pipes & PFAS to improve drinking water, and pollution remediation. These investments are part of a comprehensive effort to both build resilience against the climate crisis and completely stop it in its tracks, and it marks the largest federal investment into infrastructure in U.S. history.
