  • A Promising Hearing on Composting Bills in Need of Realistic Timelines

    On June 15th, the City Council Committee on Sanitation and Solid Waste Management held a hearing on Intros 244, 274, 275, 280 and 281, various promising bills centered around composting that may significantly reduce waste in New York City and resultantly bring about local and climate benefits.

  • Electric Vehicle Legislative Review 2022

    As a leading source of greenhouse gas emissions in New York, dirty transportation damages public health, accelerates climate change, as well as concentrates pollution in low-income communities and communities of color. Thus, there is an imminent need to promote aggressive action on cleaning up the transportation sector in order to protect public health, advance environmental justice, and achieve New York’s goal of net-zero emissions by 2050. Electric vehicles are a pathway to that.

  • Environmental Wins and Losses in the 2023 NYC Budget

    On June 13, NYC’s budget for the fiscal year of 2023 was voted on and passed 2 weeks ahead of schedule. There are a number of key takeaways from the budget regarding implications on the parks, transportation, sanitation, and building energy and emissions sectors – all of which are important to protecting the environment of NYC and the climate at large. While some of our priorities were not met, the results of this year’s budget are generally positive.

City Council Announces New Committee Chairs
Late last week City Council Speaker Adrienne Adams announced her appointees for committee chairs. The most important chairs to keep an eye on for sustainability, and building a greener city, are those for environmental protection, transportation, parks, sanitation, and resiliency. Housing, health, and finance are also important chairs that can help facilitate environmental legislation.

As New York City begins strategizing for the new year, our new administration and Council Members have the opportunity to start making transformative investments in our environmental infrastructure and resiliency. Introducing Our Interactive School Bus Depot Map, a New Tool for Electric School Bus Advocacy
NYLCV has been working on an interactive map that shows the location of school bus depots across NYC and gives a visual representation of the disproportionate number of school bus depots located in environmental justice areas, areas with high asthma rates, and areas with poor air quality. We took an original map created by the New York Lawyers for the Public Interest (NYLPI) and layered on relevant data showcasing air quality and potential environmental justice (EJ) areas across the city. We used the United Hospital Fund Boundaries to outline different neighborhoods across the City.

Electric School Bus Virtual Roundtable
Recently NYLCV and the NYC Clean School Bus Coalition held a virtual roundtable discussion in conjunction with NYCSBUS to speak about the importance of school bus electrification in New York City, especially within environmental justice neighborhoods and disadvantaged communities.

Major Environmental Investments in Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act
The deal secures an investment of $1.2 trillion, some of which will be used to fund new climate resilience projects, such as electric school buses, EV infrastructure, zero-low emission public transit, the removal of lead pipes & PFAS to improve drinking water, and pollution remediation. These investments are part of a comprehensive effort to both build resilience against the climate crisis and completely stop it in its tracks, and it marks the largest federal investment into infrastructure in U.S. history.

Making Vision Zero Work for New Yorkers
Vision Zero is a citywide initiative to eliminate all traffic-related fatalities and injuries by 2024. Recently the Committee on Transportation held a city council meeting to overview Vision Zero. NYLCV’s program associate Carlos Castell Croke presented testimony at this hearing to argue for faster implementation of the Streets Master Plan.
