Key Environmental Legislation on the Line as Session Nears End
As the legislative session reaches its final week, the New York League of Conservation Voters is pleased to provide an update on the progress of several priority bills. First, we are thrilled to report that the Lead Pipes Right to Know Act has already passed both the Senate and Assembly. However, there is still crucial work to be done on other important measures such as a clean fuel standard, offshore wind energy targets, waste reduction, and more.

Senator Kavanagh, Assemblymember Barrett, Environmental Advocates, and Labor Unions Rallied For Legislation to Increase New York’s Offshore Wind Goals
Senator Brian Kavanagh and Assemblymember Didi Barrett held a rally in the Capitol building to advocate for legislation to increase New York’s offshore wind goals. S. 6327/A. 7407 would increase the State’s current goal of 9 gigawatts (GW) of offshore energy by 2035 to 9.9 GW and establish three new ambitious targets: 15.8 GW by 2040, 18 GW by 2045, and 20 GW by 2050.

The release of the Mayor's Executive Budget for Fiscal Year 2024 has initiated the next phase of discussions between the Mayoral Administration and City Council toward finalizing the budget. As New York City faces many environmental and climate challenges, it is imperative that the City’s final FY24 budget prioritizes efforts to move us towards park equity, zero waste, reliable and affordable clean transportation, and more. Allocating sufficient funds towards these initiatives can help create a more sustainable, resilient, and equitable future for the City and its residents.

Getting Close to Yes on the Lead Pipe Right to Know Act
The chairs of the Health Committee of the New York State Legislature -- Senator Gustavo Rivera and Assemblymember Amy Paulin – have introduced legislation, S.5512 / A. 6115 known as the “Lead Pipe Right to Know Act.” This bill will make information about the number and location of lead pipes easily accessible to the public and decision-makers, so that state and federal resources can be secured and efficiently disbursed to local efforts to get the lead out of New York’s drinking water by removing all lead pipes.
