The New York League of Conservation Voters Education Fund (NYLCVEF), a 501(c)(3) charitable organization focused on voter education and civic engagement, and its sister organization the New York League of Conservation Voters, use a variety of tactics to educate voters, political candidates and public officials on environmental issues and advocate for legislation. It produces educational publications, holds forums on varied climate and conservation issues and conducts civic engagement campaigns to empower more New Yorkers to be effective advocates for the environment.

The Director of Community & Civic Engagement  is responsible for strategizing and  spearheading our efforts to engage, educate and empower New Yorkers to be active advocates for the environment.  The Director oversees a team focused on public programs, educational events, membership growth and volunteer development.   The Director collaborates closely with the Development, Communications, Political  and Policy departments  to carry out this mission. 

The primary responsibilities include: 

  • Development and execution of programs to support the mission of the organizations, in particular for clean energy, clean transportation, clean water, zero waste, parks and open spaces, and non-partisan voter enrollment, engagement and mobilization
  • Manage a team of 3 full time staff along with fellows and interns
  • Working with the President, staff, program committee, and partners to develop public policy forums, candidate forums, civic engagement campaigns, and nonpartisan electoral campaigns
  • Working with the development staff to seek corporate and foundation grants for programmatic work 
  • Working with the policy team to identify and develop campaigns  around key goals from our annual policy agendas
  • Working with the communications team to develop content for the organization’s websites, social media channels and publications
  • Creating strategies to identify, engage with, and build the number of environmental voters in New York
  • Managing our  non-partisan pro-democracy campaign ‘Our Vote is Our Power’ to encourage New Yorkers to register to vote, utilize early voting and be knowledgeable about ballot initiatives
  • Working with partners and representing the organization within coalitions
  • Overseeing implementation of funded programs
  • Coordinating with the development department to report to funders, donors and Board members on programmatic results

The Director of Community & Civic Engagement position presents an exciting opportunity for a leader who thrives in a culture that is entrepreneurial and collaborative, mission-driven, and results oriented. The ideal candidate possesses the following qualifications:

  • A minimum of 5-7 years of relevant work experience 
  • Ability to manage multiple ongoing projects, and develop and use evaluation tools to gauge program effectiveness 
  • Understanding of nonprofit organizational development, budgeting and strategic planning 
  • Strong communication skills: excellent writer, active listener, and articulate speaker
  • Knowledge of and interest in New York politics (both local and statewide), environmental issues, and non-partisan electoral politics
  • The position will require regular travel across the state

Compensation: $90,000 – $100,000. NYLCV offers a competitive salary commensurate with experience, along with holiday, vacation, 401k plan, and health/dental benefits. NYLCV is based in lower Manhattan and works in a hybrid work environment.
