Days after Hurricane Ida ripped through New York, NYLCV teamed up with a local artist to participate in a community art activation connecting New York’s urgent need to address local climate threats with the stories of the people and communities who are already impacted by the climate crisis. 

With power outages and flooding across the city, Hurricane Ida’s impact highlights the need for New York City to strengthen its infrastructure, especially as climate change becomes a greater threat.

Citi Bike provides a sustainable way to travel the Big Apple and the pedal-assisted e-bikes offer an accessible option for more people and longer distances. With this in mind, Citi Bike electrification presents an opportunity to promote environmental justice, public health, equity, equality, and reliability for New Yorkers. 

As New York begins to emerge stronger from the pandemic, congestion pricing is needed now more than ever. By reducing vehicular pollution and improving public transportation, we can minimize the impact of climate change, enable public transportation to be the crux of the city’s commuting system, and allow the economy to flourish.

On August 11th, NYLCV co-hosted a policy roundtable focused on lead service line replacement with Congressman Paul Tonko, the representative for New York’s 20th congressional district, held at his district office in Albany.

To help address our clean drinking water crisis, NYLCV signed a letter with the Clean Water for All Coalition urging Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer and House Speaker Nancy Pelosi to make clean water investments a priority in both the bipartisan and reconciliation infrastructure packages.

We recently co-hosted a virtual town hall with mayors from four states in the Mid-Atlantic region, including Albany Mayor Kathy Sheehan. The mayors called on Congress to pass the Build Back Better $3.5 trillion infrastructure and climate plan, highlighting the family-sustaining union jobs that would be created with a transformational investment in clean energy.

The White House Environmental Justice Advisory Council recently released a report on recommendations to improve federal climate and environmental justice policy. As work on climate recovery legislation picks up steam in Congress, the insights in this report are more important than ever.
