In a politically contentious local area, Gillen has made great work in advancing her environmental agenda for the Town. Gillen began her tenure by introducing the Town’s first-ever environmental committee. She then went on to successfully fight for the preservation of environmental labs in the Town that were slated to be closed, kickstart a reef rehabilitation program and oyster breeding initiative, and create Green Spot, an EV car share program. Moving forward, Gillen has pledged to work on establishing a new tree planting ordinance to increase the number of plantings across the town, and to pilot a new scooter-share transit system to lower the vehicular carbon footprint of Hempstead and increase transportation options for residents. Gillen also pledges to make Hempstead a certified Climate Smart Community.
