NYLCV PAC and Laborers Launch Aggressive Six-Figure Campaign Targeting Legislators for Killing the Clean Water Plan

Six-Figure IE To Include Robust Mail and Digital, Focus on Legislature’s Failure to Protect Clean Water

The New York League of Conservation Voters PAC (NYLCV PAC) and the New York State Laborers (NYS LIUNA) are joining forces to launch a powerful six-figure independent expenditure to educate voters on the significance of The Clean Water Plan and the reasons behind its obstruction.

The planned six-figure expenditure includes a robust mail and digital campaign in opposition to:
Dominick Thorne, R-District 7
Manuel Esteban, R-District 16
Stephanie Bontempi, R-District 18

The campaign aims to inform voters on the significance of The Clean Water Plan and encourage them to hold their legislators accountable for killing it.

“The Clean Water Plan was a once-in-a-lifetime chance for Suffolk County to improve water quality, generate good-paying jobs that can support families, and drive economic growth,” said Pat Purcell, Executive Director of NYS Laborers’ LECET and of the Build New York Fund. “But legislators chose political theater over their constituents. They robbed them.”

“What the Majority did was unconscionable, breaking a longtime streak of bipartisan support for clean water programs. Furthermore, they have subverted the democratic process. We aim to make sure that voters know why these dirty water politicians should be ousted from office.” said Joshua Klainberg, Senior Vice President, NYLCV PAC.

The Clean Water Plan presented an opportunity to leverage unprecedented federal funding for critical infrastructure improvements addressing Suffolk County’s long-standing sewage crisis. These problems, including nitrogen contamination from cesspools and septic tanks, have plagued Long Island’s waterways for decades, posing severe threats to both the environment and public health.

Despite the area’s urgent need for these upgrades, the plan was blocked by the GOP-controlled legislature. There will not be a second chance to get these federal dollars, so this historic opportunity will now pass Suffolk County by. The IE intends to bring attention to this issue and urge voters to hold their Legislators accountable.
