NYLCVEF Holds Senate District 1 Environmental Candidate Forum
Long Island, N.Y. – Voters on Long Island yesterday had the opportunity to ask candidates for State Senate District 1 where they stand on the environment. The New York League of Conservation Voters Education Fund (NYLCVEF) hosted a virtual Environmental Candidate Forum with candidates Anthony Palumbo and Laura Ahearn. The candidates discussed how the State can meet its climate goals, renewable energy, their plans for resiliency, fighting nitrogen pollution and protecting water quality.
Julie Tighe, President of the New York League of Conservation Voters Education Fund, said, “Living in Suffolk County means interacting with environmental issues on a daily basis. From vast opportunities like offshore wind and clean transportation to tremendous challenges like groundwater contamination and rising sea levels, this district is at the forefront of modern environmental policy. We held this forum to make sure the next Senator, and voters, keeps the environment a priority. We thank all of our partners and attendees for showing up for our community and for caring about our planet.”
State Senators have a big impact on the environment in New York. They can sponsor legislation to protect the environment, encourage the growth of renewable energy, and provide funding for clean water infrastructure. Legislators can also serve on relevant committees such as the Energy, Environmental Conservation, and Transportation Committees. These committees can refine and focus bills on particular subjects and weigh their merits, often influencing whether they will pass or not.
The forum was moderated by the publisher of RiverheadLOCAL and EastEndLocal, Denise Civiletti. Partners included: Citizens Campaign for the Environment, The Climate Reality Project – New York State Coalition, Climate Jobs NY Education Fund, Friends of Georgica Pond Foundation, Group for the East End, and the Long Island Farm Bureau.
Video of the forum is available here.
The New York League of Conservation Voters Education Fund educates, engages, and empowers New Yorkers to be effective environmental advocates.
