The New York League of Conservation Voters, which works to make environmental sustainability a top political and policy priority in New York State, has announced its endorsement of state senate candidates Shelley Mayer in District 37 (Westchester) and Luis Sepúlveda in District 32 (Bronx) in the April 24th Special Election.
“We are confident that, if elected, Shelley Mayer and Luis Sepúlveda, will bring their strong environmental records of support to the state senate. Each candidate has worked hard in the state assembly to advance a pro-environment agenda earning high marks on NYLCV’s 2017 Environmental Scorecard. We strongly encourage all environmentally-minded voters in Westchester and the Bronx to support Shelley Mayer and Luis Sepúlveda on April 24th,” said Marcia Bystryn, President of the New York League of Conservation Voters.
“I am so proud to have the support of New York League of Conservation Voters as I run for state senate. Westchester residents are all too familiar with the impact of climate change and severe weather. We can’t afford to let climate change deniers and anti-environment extremists hold on to power in Washington and Albany. In the State Senate I will fight to protect our local environment and help pass statewide legislation to address the threat of climate change,” said Assemblymember Shelley Mayer.
Assemblymember Luis Sepúlveda stated, “I am most grateful for the endorsement of the New York League of Conservation Voters, a group whose efforts fighting for clean water, clean air, renewable energy and open space I wholly support and will continue to work vigorously for in the senate on behalf of my constituents. Clean air is especially an important issue for me in the Bronx, where nearly 20 percent of children under 12 have been diagnosed with asthma, and is the number one reason children wind up in an emergency room. As you have given me your vote of support, you will always have mine.”
Shelley Mayer has been a leading environmental voice throughout her tenure as a member of the New York State Assembly. Last year, she earned a 94% on NYLCV’s State Environmental Scorecard. As an elected leader representing Yonkers in Albany, Shelley worked hard to protect the environment and address the effects of climate change. She was a vocal opponent against the proposed expansion of oil barges anchored in the Hudson River. She also successfully secured three million dollars in federal flood recovery funds for Yonkers’ resiliency projects.
As a member of the New York State Assembly representing the Bronx, Luis Sepúlveda has devoted his time in office to protecting New Yorkers from air and water pollution. Last year, he earned a 93% on NYLCV’s State Environmental Scorecard. Through his leadership, Sepúlveda has brought attention to the adverse effects on health produced from the chronic traffic congestion in the South Bronx. He has additionally been a longtime proponent of providing public access to information and reports concerning the state’s public drinking water systems.
