The New York League of Conservation Voters Kicks Off 2023 Election Cycle With First Round of Endorsements

[This article was updated to reflect new information. On June 1, the League endorsed William Keeler for Mayor of Cohoes, Terry Clements and Christopher Johnson for the Westchester Board of Legislators, and Pierina Sanchez and Amanda Farias for the New York City Council.]

The New York League of Conservation Voters is excited to announce our first round of endorsements for the 2023 election cycle. With a total of 48 endorsements, we are proud to support candidates who have demonstrated a strong commitment to protecting our environment and promoting smart environmental policies. In addition to 39 candidates for New York City Council, NYLCV is endorsing mayoral candidates in Cohoes, Saratoga Springs, Schenectady, Watervliet, Mount Vernon, New Rochelle, and Yonkers,  as well as two candidates for the Westchester Board of Legislators.

“It is clear that the environment and climate change are moving up the ladder of issues that voters prioritize when choosing their candidate,” said NYLCV President Julie Tighe. “We are thrilled to endorse these outstanding candidates for elected office. They have shown a strong commitment to protecting our environment and promoting smart environmental policies. We are confident that they will be strong advocates for clean energy, green jobs, and a healthier future, and we urge voters to support them in their upcoming election.”

The primaries will occur on June 27, 2023, with early voting for the primaries running from June 17-25, and primary Election Day on June 27. We will have additional endorsement announcements later this election season.

Last year was a big year for the environment at the ballot box. A record number of candidates sought NYLCV’s endorsement–indicating that the environment continues to grow in importance for voters–and New Yorkers overwhelmingly, and in bipartisan fashion, approved the Environmental Bond Act. NYLCV looks forward to carrying this momentum into 2023 and beyond, and we are proud to endorse the following candidates for elected office:
