Julie Tighe, President of the New York League of Conservation Voters, said, “Congress yesterday passed a major COVID relief bill, including a $4 billion investment in the MTA. We thank Senator Schumer and the New York congressional delegation for championing this down payment for our subways, buses, and rail. Reliable mass transit is essential to combating the climate crisis and protecting public health. It is essential to make our transportation sector more equitable for communities that are disproportionately burdened by the impacts of pollution, and are more reliant on mass transit. Our region needed this investment to prevent catastrophic cuts that would have caused more congestion, more emissions, and more air pollution. While we continue to urge Congress to provide further investments in mass transit, this funding is a significant step towards cleaner transportation and a cleaner environment.”
