This week, NYLCV joined Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone to discuss one of the best proposed solutions to help mitigate Long Island’s growing nitrogen pollution problem.

Congressman Paul Tonko has been working with Congressman Frank Pallone (D-NJ) to release legislation that would allow for a reauthorization of the Safe Drinking Water Act and allocate funding over the next five years to be provided to local water-line improvements.

Senator Charles Schumer announced a new bill this week that would provide tax credits for homeowners and landlords who replace lead-based infrastructure in their buildings. The proposed legislation would expand existing tax credits, and be available to any homeowner making $110,000 or less annually.

The controversy comes amidst a continued spotlight on water issues, following the ongoing crisis in Flint, Michigan.

Almost 90 properties in East Hampton Village that need to be connected to two state-of-the-art wastewater treatment systems may get funded through special district taxes. Officials are looking into projects to address rising water quality issues in the area.
