Keynote Speaker: Governor Andrew M. Cuomo

Our Corporate Honoree will be green building pioneer Daniel R. Tishman, principal of Tishman Realty. Dan is also Chairman of Tishman Construction Corporation and Vice Chairman and a member of the Board of Directors of its parent company, AECOM.  Under his leadership, AECOM Tishman has lead the way on sustainable construction, accomplishing a long list of firsts in the industry. As a past Chairman of the Board of the Natural Resources Defense Council, sustainability has also defined his philanthropic activity, through which he has donated significant expertise and support to environmental causes.

The Environment Leader honoree will be Andrew Sabin, a leading philanthropist and supporter of climate change initiatives. His passion for preserving the environment, as well as educating the community, led Andy to build the South Fork Natural History Museum in Eastern Long Island. Additionally, through his family foundation, the Andrew Sabin Family Foundation, Andy funded masters-level scholarships at Yale School of Forestry & Environmental Studies, the Sabin Sustainable Venture Prize at Yales’ Center for Business and the Environment, the Sabin Center for Climate Change Law at Columbia University and the Emmet Institute on Climate Change & the Environment at UCLA School of Law. More than just a funder of conservation efforts, Andy continues to actively work on educating individuals about the relationship between climate change and health, hoping that they will ultimately become advocates for the cause.

In honor of Marcia Bystryn’s last year as President and in recognition of her accomplishments, we will be presenting her with an award as our Champion for Environmental Change. Marcia Bystryn joined the League as Executive Director in 1999 and was named President in 2008. Under her leadership, the statewide organization has worked to elect strong environmental candidates to office and to hold them accountable. Her accomplishments include the launch of a Political Action Committee that supports pro-environment candidates for state and local office, an Education Fund to educate voters and policymakers on conservation and environmental protection issues, and the development of clear policy dicta on a range of critical issues including climate change, clean air and water, public health, renewable energy, transportation, and open space. These efforts have resulted in numerous state and local legislative and administrative victories for sound environmental policies.

Governor Andrew M. Cuomo will be our keynote speaker at this year’s Gala. Andrew M. Cuomo is the 56th Governor of New York State, having assumed office on January 1, 2011. The Governor has a lifelong commitment to public service, previously serving as New York Attorney General and Secretary of the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development. As Governor, Andrew Cuomo has taken decisive action to lead the fight against climate change and protect our environment for generations to come. The Governor’s Clean Energy Standard, the first-ever state clean energy mandate, ensures at least 50% of electricity consumed will come from renewable energy by 2030. Governor Cuomo has committed to continue driving New York’s environmental leadership on climate, public health and natural resource protecting by acting decisively to oppose any federal action that seeks to roll back progress.
