Shelley Mayer is seeking re-election for the New York State Senate, and although she took the seat only recently in 2018, as a former 6-year member of the State Assembly, she was a pioneer of a robust environmental agenda.
As a member of Committee on Environmental Conservation and Committee on Cultural Affairs, Tourism, Parks and Recreation, she advocated for an expansion of the Clean Water Infrastructure investments and voted in favor of freshwater wetland protection to enhance flood mitigation. Regarding transportation, she endorsed the construction of Bee-Line transit throughout Westchester and has been vocal about improved funding for mass transit throughout the state. Legislation she sponsored aims to make streets safer for cyclists and pedestrians and she additionally co-sponsored the Climate and Community Protection Act to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and improve community resilience. Her relentless efforts merited her a 94% on NYLCV’s 2017 Environmental Scorecard, signifying her support for Suffolk County farmland protection and disclosure of harmful toxins in children’s products.
Looking forward, Mayer will continue to safeguard the quality of drinking water and the Hudson River, as well as push for retrofit and outreach programs that assist low-income communities in transitioning to clean energy.
