Shahana Hanif is running for re-election to represent District 39 in the New York City Council. Representing a coastal district, Hanif has focused on developing legislation for flood mitigation and adaptation strategies, along with other projects which center dialogues on climate justice. She has worked to expand sustainable food systems and food justice within public schools, fighting to provide Halal, Kosher, and plant-based meal options in cafeterias. If elected, she plans to continue to reduce dependency on fossil fuels through the full implementation of Local Law 97, the reclamation of street space from cars, and increased inspection to prevent lead poisoning, especially in NYCHA campuses and in BIPOC, immigrant, and working-class communities.
