Catherine Kent

Catherine Kent is running for election as a legislator for Suffolk County’s 1st district. Kent has dedicated much of her time to advocating for the environment. As a teacher, she incorporated lessons about environmental issues into her curriculum. Serving as a councilperson on the Riverhead Town Board, Kent helped form the first Riverhead Town Environmental Advisory Committee, which helped establish Riverhead as a Climate Smart Community. She also formed a Green Team and a Climate Smart Task Force. As a clean water advocate, Kent partnered with Peconic Green Growth, a nonprofit, to work on a water conservation program with the Riverhead School District. As a county legislator, she plans to support and expand the funding of the Septic Improvement Program. Kent also helped form the Riverhead Downtown Revitalization Committee, which hired urban design associates to create a long-range plan for Riverhead’s Downtown area with recommendations for sustainability, particularly regarding flooding along the Peconic River. If elected, Kent plans to work with other government officials to help build resilience in our energy grid system, adopt green building standards for residential and commercial buildings, protect and preserve the open space, and she will remain dedicated to the environment and work hard to create a greener Suffolk County.
