Alexa Aviles
Alexa Avilés is running for re-election to represent District 38 in the New York City Council. A fierce advocate for environmental justice, Avilés has fought to address the disproportionate pollution burden on low-income communities and communities of color in her district. Since taking office, she has passed multiple air quality bills that will help curb pollution from last-mile e-commerce distribution centers, which have contributed to rising truck traffic and deteriorating air quality. She successfully secured a special permit requirement for these facilities and is pushing for an indirect source rule to reduce truck-related pollution. Avilés also sponsored a bill to require cruise ships with shore power capability to connect to shore power, cutting harmful diesel emissions near residential communities. Beyond air quality, Avilés has been a leader in transparency and accountability, co-sponsoring legislation to create a public online database tracking environmental commitments in land use applications. If re-elected, Avilés will fight to reduce emissions from our buildings and continue to prioritize the health of her community.
