2005 New York City Council Scorecard

Most members of the City Council talk the talk on the environment. But when it comes down to it, how do voters know whether their councilmember has actually been performing on those green promises?

NYLCV tracks all environmental bills introduced in the City Council. Currently there are more than 100. NYLCV's Environmental Scorecard identifies priority bills and provides objective numbers on our elected officials' commitment to passing important environmental legislation.

Bills are chosen with the advice of an advisory committee of leading environmental, public health and civic organizations. Scores are based on the number of pro-environment votes cast. In the event a key bill fails to come up for a vote, we count sponsorship as a "vote."

Councilmembers were repeatedly notified of the priority bills and the deadline for signing on to them (August 15, 2005). In 2005, NYLCV rated the New York City Council's environmental voting record. NYLCV's environmental Scorecard holds legislators accountable by identifying key bills and providing an objective evaluation.
