The state legislature has given unanimous support to Governor David Paterson [1]'s proposed legislation, which will provide homeowners with financial incentives to "go green." The New York State Energy Research and Development Authority [2] (NYSERDA) will now create a comprehensive program that will reward people whose renovation and construction projects are on par with green building standards.

David Paterson According to the governor's website [2], residential buildings account for 22% of the nation's energy use and greenhouse gas emissions, and they are responsible for 74% of our water usage. Members of the legislature hope that homeowners will begin to reduce their resource consumption, benefiting the environment and the state economy while taking advantage of NYSERDA's grants. A similar program [3]already exists for commercial buildings, but this legislation is the first to expand such incentives to the residential sector.

As proof of his commitment to the environment, Governor Paterson has had work [4] begun on the executive mansion, which he wants certified as a green building.
