Climate Action Agenda for New York State

The science on climate change is in: Global warming is happening, and the enormity of the problem requires a set of comprehensive solutions at every level of government.

For years, states, cities, and counties across the nation have been taking the lead on environmental issues, often times before the federal government gets into the game. Local action has the potential to drive innovation and move the national debate forward.

What's needed here in New York State is for every level of government to develop its own, "Climate Action Agenda." These plans should contain a set of long-term goals as well as discrete actions state and local government can take to achieve these goals. When combined, all of these climate actions will add up to a big climate change fix.

There are a host of actions local governments can take to address this important issue. Here's a sample of what's been either done or proposed by other local governments in New York State

New York State made a bold move in 2003 when it joined the Regional Greenhouse Gas Initiative (RGGI), but stronger action is needed. With a clear mandate for change and a new governor at the helm, New York is poised to be a national leader in climate change solutions. To spur further action, NYLCV has put forth a comprehensive Climate Action Agenda for New York State.

On April 22, 2007, New York City, at the urging of NYLCV, launched a 25-year sustainability plan to help address climate change and keep New York at the forefront of action.

In Westchester, County Executive Andy Spano has set up a global warming task force that could lead to major reductions in greenhouse gas emission across industries. Long Island towns have passed some of the strongest green building codes in the nation. Innovations are taking root in the Capital District, the Hudson Valley, and in Central and Western New York.

The political opportunities around climate action are huge, and the time is ripe for the state of New York to make its mark on the national stage.
