New York, New York --- The New York League of Conservation Voters, the nonpartisan voice for New York's environmental community, today announced its endorsement of Jim Dougherty for Shelter Island supervisor. Dougherty has a distinguished record of community leadership and commitment to environmental issues, as seen in his work with the South Fork, Shelter Island Chapter of The Nature Conservancy, the Shelter Island Community Land Preservation Board and The Peconic BayKeeper. Dougherty also played an integral role in the extension of the Community Preservation Fund, which helps preserve and protect open space on Shelter Island. Marcia Bystryn, executive director of the New York League of Conservation Voters, said: "Jim Dougherty has shown a commitment to preserving Shelter Island's environment and a dedication to preserving the island's natural resources for the next generation of residents. We enthusiastically endorse Jim's candidacy, and with it foresee a more sustainable future for Shelter Island." If elected, Dougherty pledges to continue his open space preservation initiative and enforce zoning laws to protect Shelter Island's aquifers, bays and harbors. In response to the endorsement, Dougherty said: "I have enormous respect for the work of the New York League of Conservation Voters and am honored to accept their endorsement of my bid to become supervisor of Shelter Island. The League has done so much for the environment in New York State and I am proud of my work in preserving open space on Shelter Island, keeping it as one of New York's environmental crown jewels. The best is yet to come and I intend to be a key player in the effort." ########################### The New York League of Conservation Voters (NYLCV) was founded in 1989 as a non-partisan, policy making and political action organization that works to make environmental protection a top priority with elected officials, decision makers, and voters by evaluating incumbent performance and endorsing and electing environmental leaders to office in New York State.
