Election Day is not only an opportunity to express your constitutional rights, it's also your chance as a concerned citizen to preserve and enhance the world in which you live. So vote for your local environment with the help of the New York League of Conservation Voters, which has scrutinized the political contenders and provided 20 coveted endorsements to Westchester County candidates based on their track records and future plans.

In the Yonkers mayoral race, the New York League of Conservation Voters endorses Phil Amicone. His dedication to environmentally sustainable policies is reflected in his ongoing effort to reclaim and restore Yonkers' three waterways -- the Hudson, the Saw Mill and the Bronx Rivers -- along with his proposed initiatives to establish green building regulations for downtown Yonkers.

New Rochelle Mayor Noam BramsonNew Rochelle Mayor Noam BramsonNYLCV also endorses Noam Bramson for mayor of New Rochelle. Bramson has demonstrated his commitment to the environment on a range of issues, including the improvement of water quality in Long Island Sound, his support for a ban on pollution-generating incinerators and restrictions on auto idling.

William Schmidt, running for mayor of Peekskill, garnered our endorsement for his plans to make city operations more energy efficient, thereby saving taxpayer funds and reducing emissions. Philip Trifiletti has earned NYLCV's seal of approval for his mayoral race in Mamaroneck. In Trifiletti's prior mayoral terms, he successfully reopened Harbor Park Beach after resolving the area's longstanding sewage management problem. He plans to continue the improvement of Mamaroneck's sewage system as well as enhance air quality and beautify the region through planting new trees.

For Westchester County Legislature, we endorse Tom Abinanti, who continues to promote healthy air quality by setting air pollution standards and restricting the use of pesticides, and Jose Alvarado, who has worked to lessen the environmental impact of the Southwest Yonkers' sewage plant. NYLCV also endorses Peter Harckham, who supports solar power use and the expansion of clean mass transit; Ken Jenkins, who has vowed to help reduce carbon emissions; and Michael Kaplowitz, who is focused on land preservation through the acquisition of over 1,000 acres of open space. In addition, NYLCV endorses Judy Myers, who plans to implement regional planning and intermunicipality cooperation to reduce flood damage in the Westchester region. We also endorse Martin Rogowsky, who is currently working to formulate a recycling plan for compact fluorescent lightbulbs.
