Nation's Transportation Future Now In U.S. House's Hands

Submitted by Dan Hendrick on Thu, 2012-03-15 13:50.

Transportation for America CoalitionNYLCV's Education Fund is playing important roles in pushing for a smarter national transportation plan for years. Today, we are excited to report that a breakthrough has been made.

On Wednesday night, the U.S. Senate. passed a strong, bipartisan transportation bill. It restores the transit commuter tax benefit at $240/month, reforms the New Starts program to get transit projects out the door faster and creates a transit-oriented development planning grant program for municipalities.

If this bill becomes law, it will help repair our roads and bridges, ensure local control of funds to help make walking and bicycling safer, and hold states accountable for how they spend their transportation dollars for the next two years.

But a big "if" still remains. While the Senate has done its part, the House hasn't yet come close to moving a bill that can win broad, bipartisan support. And the clock is ticking as we rush toward the March 31 expiration of the transportation program.
