BP Backlash Deals Blow To LNG Project In New York

Besides highlighting the need for state action on clean energy, the BP oil spill has had another consequence for New York: a pause in plans for a liquefied natural gas terminal off New York City.

The Altantic Sea Island Group's initiative was one of three LNG terminals planned for the New York/New Jersey coast.The Altantic Sea Island Group's initiative was one of three LNG terminals planned for the New York/New Jersey coast.The Atlantic Sea Island Group filed for a "temporary" withdrawal of its application to build a man-made island/gas terminal 15 miles off the Rockaway Peninsula. The company cited the backlash from the gulf oil spill, as well as the "prevailing uncertainty" of the global economy as contributing factors. 

According to the Daily News, the U.S. Coast Guard and the U.S. Department of Transportation both accepted the withdrawal of the application last week.

The terminal had been planned to deliver up to 2 billion cubic feet of liquefied natural gas, or LNG, per day through an underwater pipeline connected to the mainland in Nassau County.
