A fourth nuclear plant may be added to Oswego County's Nine Mile Point facility, according to an article in The Post Standard.  An application to build the plant was filed by UniStar Nuclear Energy with the Nuclear Regulatory Agency.

Nine Mile Point nuclear plantThe application is one of several that the NRA has received in the past year after receiving none during the previous three decades.   The review of UniStar's Nine Mile Point application is slated to begin this September.  The process is expected to last three to four years.

Proponents of the nuclear plant say that it will create 4,000 construction jobs and up to 400 permanent positions in a county that suffers the highest unemployment rate in Central New York.  Opponents cite concerns over safety, handlling of nuclear waste, and potential cost overruns.

Nine Mile Point 1, New York State's first nuclear plant, opened in 1969.  Additional reactors were opened there in 1975 and 1987.   Today the three generate enough electricity to power 2.85 million homes.

In 2008 NYLCV's Education Fund launched its "Powering the Future" campaign. Its goal was to host a series of policy forums aimed at breaking through the clutter surrounding energy policy and providing policy makers and the general public with an unbiased and neutral arena to discuss these critical issues. Among the topics discussed was nuclear energy.
