Town of North Castle Releases Draft Climate Action Plan

Submitted by Bret Finkelstein on Thu, 2009-11-05 16:16.
The Town of North Castle and its Global Warming Task Force have released a draft action plan to combat global warming.  The plan, which is set to be finalized later this year, will be implemented over the next few years according to the Journal News.

The draft action plan includes several recommendations to decrease the town's carbon footprint.  Land use, energy, and transportation, are among the areas covered by the plan.  Some of the specific recommendations include:

  • Increased school bus ridership and promotion of car pools;
  • Solar panels on a town building; and
  • Protection of sensitive land and promotion of biodiversity.

The Task Force's plan was based partly on the results of the town's greenhouse gas inventory which concluded that North Castle was responsible for 124,359 tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions in 2006.

North Castle's action plan comes on the heels of Westchester County's Westchester Action Plan for Climate Change and Sustainable Development, which was released last year and encourages Westchester municipalities like North Castle to create their own action plans.
