A Superfund designation would mean $15 million in federal funds to clean up Newtown CreekOn Sunday, New York lawmakers asked the federal government to declare Newtown Creek a Superfund site, reports theGovernor%20David%20A.%20Paterson" target="_blank" title="New York Daily News"> New York Daily News. The estuary, which runs between Queens and Brooklyn, has been a dumping ground for industrial and domestic wastes and is one of America's most polluted places. Over 30 million gallons of oil have been spilled there over years, and a Superfund designation would mean $15 million in federal cleanup funds. Democratic Reps. Anthony Weiner and Nydia Velazquez, whose districts encompass the creek, want the Environmental Protection Agency to start testing the waters immediately and say a cleanup would take a decade. |
