Riverspace Aims to Remake Dowtown NyackSubmitted by Jaclynn Martin on Thu, 2008-06-26 11:46.
The city of Nyack has plans to reconstruct the riverside with new arts, residential and retail complex according to The Journal News . The plan is to give Nyack a more welcoming destination for commuters and tourist. Many residents, business owners, and public officials are excited for the new development, saying it will bring a value to Nyack. The estimated price for Riverspace is at $100 million, which will include two parking garages, four retail-office and residential buildings, a new arts center, and also an outdoor plaza. Board member of the Riverspace hopes to receive around $27 million from the public for the parking garage and street construction. Josh Goldberg member of the board says this plan is meant to draw people to Nyack and increase the economic wealth of the residents.
There are also people from the community who do not see the Riverspace as being realistic. They worry that public funding and tax breaks impact Nyack and Rockland County residents. John Pandolfo has similar concerns. "The biggest gripe I have is that the donation of property, the tax break given to the occupants, and the possible floating of a bond will all impact taxpayers." Depew Manor resident John Bradley believes the new buildings can affect the quality of life for him and other senior citizens in the area. Seems that the Mayor, Senate, and Assemblywomen of Nyack all support the plan for the Riverspace. Mayor John Shields says he would support an agreement to freeze taxes at the Riverspace site at its current rate. The organization is going to have to come up with a financial plan and get approved for tax-exempt bonds by the Rockland County Industrial Development Agency. |
