Indian Point cleared its first inspection hurdle in its effort to continue operating through 2035, according to the The Journal News.

Glen Meyer, one of five Nuclear Regulatory Commission officials reporting the results of the inspection, said that "the non safety systems and structures have been adequately addressed with few exceptions noted."

Indian PointIndian PointThe plant's owners, Entergy Nuclear and NRC, said that any problems at Indian Point have been or are in the process of being fixed. However, two of the plant's reactors will be shut down in 2013 and 2015 respectively if their 40 year licenses are not renewed.

Westchester County, the state of New York, and many environmental groups have argued against the license renewal.
