Long Island Recycling Programs Need ImprovementSubmitted by Jenna Brofsky on Tue, 2008-06-10 14:20.
Long Island recycling programs are not making the cut, as reported in Newsday. Citizen's Campaign for the Environment, a Farmingdale advocacy group, presented report cards to 14 Long Island municipalities, of which only eight received passing grades. The report cards were based on acquiring points, which were earned for having comprehensive programs, offering incentives to recycle and providing advertisements. Points were deducted for wasteful programming. Given that only one town, Islip, received an "A", the group is calling for improvements to Long Island recycling programs that will make it easier for people to recycle, including the addition of more bins in public places, better waste management and further education.
