High Fuel Prices Lead to Increased Ferry Usage on Long Island

Submitted by Jenna Brofsky on Mon, 2008-06-09 14:29.

As fuel prices rise, more people are using Long Island ferries as a way to cut down on costs and travel time, according to Newsday.

This season will witness additional ferry usage as drivers try to avoid traffic congestion on Long Island. Trucks and tractor-trailers, burdened by increased fuel prices, have also been using the ferry as a shortcut.

Even with increased ridership, however, ferry companies have been hurt by higher diesel fuel prices. While some companies raise their fares, others are aiming to conserve fuel by sailing with the wind and tides.
