Open Space Preserved On Shelter IslandSubmitted by Liana Grey on Thu, 2008-06-05 12:56.
The Shelter Island Reporter reports that the county's Environmental Legacy Fund and the Town of Shelter Island will split the $5 million cost. Formerly privately owned, the property encompasses ecologically significant wetlands along Crab Creek. Shelter Island's Parks and Recreation Department may permit mild recreational use of the area. "Crab Creek is a beautiful area sitting on one of Shelter Island’s peninsulas,” Shelter Island Town Supervisor James Dougherty said. “I am delighted to partner with SuffolkCounty to preserve this vital piece of land.” County Legislator Edward Romaine added that “This acquisition will add to the county’s holdings in this area and helps solidify our commitment to preserving the remaining open space on Shelter Island.” |
