Landmark Deal Will Preserve 690 Acres In Cortlandt

Submitted by Liana Grey on Thu, 2008-06-05 12:08.

Developers are preserving 690 acres of forest at a condominium complex in Cortlandt, according to the Journal News.

A portion of the woodland, which abuts the historic Valeria complex, will be converted into public parkland. Members of the Valeria homeowner's association will be given exclusive access to the rest. The decision marks the end of extensive negotiations over an expansion project at the Valeria, which will include 147 tightly clustered, energy efficient units.

The Westchester Land Trust will oversee use of the woodland to prevent future development.

"It's an ecologically significant area, and leaving it open will create a protected enclave for wildlife," said Ed Vergano, Cortlandt's director of technical services.
