The Indian Point nuclear power plantThe Indian Point nuclear power plantA leak of radioactive water at the Indian Point power plant in 2005 poses little threat to public health, according to the Nuclear Regulatory Commission.

The NRC's branch chief in the division of reactor safety, John White, told Cortlandt Manor residents on Tuesday that "folks are getting more radiation exposure sitting in this meeting" than they are from the tritium and strontium draining into the Hudson River. His comments were reported in the Times Herald-Record, which covered an annual meeting to discuss the leaks.

Indian Point's reactor unit 1 has leaked strontium since the early 1990s; Entergy, which owns Indian Point, must begin draining spent fuel from that unit this summer as part of the cleanup effort. Tritium leaks discovered in reactor Unit 2 have been repaired, the company said.

The NRC said it will maintain its watch over Indian Point and require the company to continue testing its wells and treating contamination, but many residents at Tuesday's meeting were not convinced.
