John Cameron, acting chair of NYLCV's Long Island ChapterJohn D. Cameron Jr., acting chair of the NYLCV's Long Island Chapter, has some well-defined ideas about how to tackle the mounting environmental challenges facing Long Island.

According to his op-ed in Long Island Business News, the answer is first to broaden the notion of "environmental protection" to rethink how we power and heat our homes, how we consume natural resources, how we get around and how we plan our communities.

Cameron calls on local governments in both Nassau and Suffolk to face what he calls "the most important environmental challenge of this generation - climate change."

As the state government works to adopt an energy planning strategy, Cameron sites the need for Long Island to adopt its own energy standards as well as examine the need to repair and expand the aging Long Island Rail Road system.
