Indian Point 2 was put back online Tuesday morning after being shut down the day before, the Journal News reported. Maintenance workers were able to replace the faulty circuit in the monitoring system.

The Indian Point nuclear power plantThe Indian Point nuclear power plantAccording to federal Nuclear Regulatory Commission officials, the main turbine that creates electricity was rotating too slowly and water levels in the steam generator were receding. Due to these conditions, the operators decided to shut down the reactor.

Although Indian Point officials not sure what caused the problem, they believe it may be due to monitoring equipment. An NRC spokesman said the plant was in stable condition during the shutdown, and that there was no release of radiation or threat to the public.

The latest shut down of the Indian Point 2 doesn't change the reactor's top level green rating from the NRC. A spokeswoman for Entergy Nuclear, which owns and operates Indian Point, noted that the latest shutdown "does leave us with a smaller margin to remain green."

The Indian Point 3 has operated smoothly without any interruption for 355 days.
