Elected Officials Must Get Staten Island A Mass-Transit Fix

Submitted by Nana-Yaw Acheampong on Tue, 2008-02-05 18:58.
Many Staten Islanders have their misgivings about congestion pricing, but they should not underestimate the benefits it could bring, says Cormac Gordon in the Staten Island Advance.

While polls show that 74 percent of islanders don't support congestion pricing (that number drops to 47 percent if CP pays for better transit), the federal government is waiting to cut a $354 million check to NYC as soon as the plan is passed for new buses. In addition, congestion pricing could pay for $400 million in mass transit improvements each year. That's news to the ears of Staten Island residents, where the mass transit infrastructure is currently too small.
