Nuclear Lobby Gaining Steam In NY StateSubmitted by Joshua Finkelstein on Tue, 2008-01-08 17:50.
Entergy, the company that owns both nuclear power plants in New York State, has been conducting a multimillion-dollar lobbying campaign in order to rally both the public and lawmakers around supporting their upcoming NRC license renewal. According to Newsday, ever since the events of September 11th, Entergy began promoting nuclear power's safety and benefits and has recently intensified these efforts because of the upcoming license renewal for both of its New York State plants within the next few years. The company has been pitching nuclear power in ads as the answer to environmental and economic concerns, reliance on foreign oil, and also as the answer to the state's increasing energy needs. However, despite all the positives Entergy has been advertising, critics have been quite vocal about the nuclear plants obvious drawbacks. Indian Point, especially, has drawn large opposition because of safety concerns and its location next to the metro area and also because of potential chemical leaks into the Hudson River. Spitzer and Cuomo have loudly voiced their opposition to renewing the plant's license and others have even called for its closure. Assemblyman Richard Broadsky described the quandary in a few words. "In fact, the chance of an accident at Indian Point is relatively small," Brodsky said. "The problem is the consequences are mind-boggling." |
