Catskill Ski Resort Still Facing Opposition

Submitted by Dan Hendrick on Wed, 2007-12-26 11:11.

Gov. Eliot Spitzer may have brokered a more environmentally friendly version of a long-stalled Catskills resort plan, but opposition in the local community remains dynamic.

According to the Associated Press, signs are common in front yards in Highmount, where the resort is planned, and a recent public comment session about potential environmental issues drew more than 100 people who signed up to speak. In addition, some environmental groups support the plan (NRDC) while others do not (Sierra Club).

Spitzer's plan calls for a 629-unit resort near the state-owned Belleayre ski center, along with a golf course.
