Nassau County Executive Tom SuozziNassau County Executive Tom Suozzi on Tuesday announced the proposed uses for $100 million of bond funds that voters approved in 2006. The Environmental Program Advisory Committee, which was appointed by Suozzi, is chaired by NYLCV's Long Island Chair Brian Muellers.

The committee recommended 95 out of 299 projects that were submitted by local governments and the public. Among them were the acquisition of more than 300 acres of open space, preserving four farms, improving parks, cleaning up brownfields and protecting waterways and wetlands.

The committee's recommendations will be reviewed by the Open Space and Parks Advisory Committee and the Planning Commission. They will go to the Legislature and county executive for final approval.

"These recommendations are crucial to preserving everything we love about suburbia," Suozzi said. "If we want to keep Nassau County a financially strong, attractive place to live, we must protect our remaining parcels of open space, clean up polluted brownfields and continue to improve our parks and recreational centers."
