Groups Energized Over NYC Energy Security

Submitted by Dan Hendrick on Tue, 2007-06-19 16:04.

Facing unpredictability in the price and availabilty of fuel supplies, New York City must adopt an energy shortage contingency plan, according to a coalition of environmental and community groups.

The coalition gained steam from the recent Sierra Club report, "Moving New York City toward Sustainable Energy Independence" which urges the City Council to resurrect a bill, drafted in 2004 by its own Environmental Committee. It would seek the rapid deployment of decentralized, renewable power, and other measures that will enhance PlaNYC 2030 implementation. The coalition pointed to concerns about the energy supply, including unrest in oil-producing regions, depleting supplies and rising demand, in concluding that the energy markets are growing increasingly volatile.
