Ellen Jaffee was elected to represent the 97th District in the State Assembly in 2007. Throughout that time, and as a current member of the Committee on Environmental Conservation, she has overseen the passage of large amounts of environmental legislation, backing efforts to incentivize the use of geothermal and biofuel heating systems as well as place speed cameras in particular school zones.
In regards to the legislation she has sponsored, Jaffee has focused specifically on protecting clean water, enacting the Private Well Testing Act and creating the Well Water and Water Supply Education Act. She fought against the construction of a Desalination plant in Rockland County, proposed by international corporation Suez United Water. Jaffee has additionally been committed to toxic contaminant regulation, supporting initiatives to increase lead testing in public schools, lower the definition of elevated blood lead levels and to require manufacturers of children’s products to disclose the presence of potentially damaging chemicals. She also sponsored A03786, which prohibits the sale of cleaning products containing certain harmful antibacterial compounds.
Jaffee, If re-elected, is committed to continuing her efforts as well as furthering an environmental agenda centered around resource preservation, sustainable development, and improvements for transportation infrastructure and efficiency.
