Shien-ru Tsao is a product designer and serial entrepreneur in New York City. She established her own design studio working on projects ranging from brand identity, package design to custom social announcements. To date, she has developed three businesses and sold two. She is currently working on her fourth start-up, Commit to Green, Inc. A social enterprise aiming to inspire individuals to participate in initiatives that drive sustainable change. Founded on the belief that smart design that is effectively applied to the correct medium can raise awareness in our communities.

Shien-ru’s products range from paper goods, pet apparel, women’s accessories and compostable disposable goods. Over the years, her collections have sold throughout the US and International markets in boutique establishments along with mass-market retailers such as Anthropologie, Macy’s, Petco, and QVC. Shien-ru’s designs have been featured in Glamour.com, Real Simple Magazine, Modern Dog Magazine, The Chicago Tribune, The Austin Statesman, Treehugger.com and Racked NYC + National.

Her volunteer activities include:
•Board Member of the Manhattan Solid Waste Advisory Board (SWAB). A non-profit, non-governmental organization dedicated to increasing recycling, reducing solid waste, and advancing solid waste policy in New York City. Comprised of waste and recycling industry experts, appointed by the Manhattan Borough President’s Office (2016)
•Board of Advocates for Citizen Schools New York, a non-profit organization that partners with middle schools across the US to expand the learning day for low-income children (2009-2013)
•Founder + Projects Coordinator for Project 116, a social enterprise that provides opportunities for students to learn the art and science of entrepreneurship. Students learn how to develop sustainable products through hands-on projects (2009-2013)

In 2010, she received the President’s Council on Service and Civic Participation award. The President’s Volunteer Service Award in recognition of commitment to strengthen the Nation and for making a difference through volunteer service.
